FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and most people find it generally painless and deeply relaxing. A sensation of warmth or a gentle heaviness is sometimes felt – this is your Qi responding to treatment and is therapeutically beneficial. If there is any discomfort at any time, we simply remove the needle.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe and negative side effects are extremely rare. Needles are sterile and single-use. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years safely and effectively.

What can acupuncture and Chinese Medicine treat?

Because it is such a wholistic and comprehensive medical system, Chinese medicine can treat just about anything! From migraines to digestive disorders, insomnia, injury and chronic pain, PMS or depression and anxiety, Chinese medicine can help.

How do I schedule?

Online booking is coming soon, for now you can email by clicking on “Book Now” button or call the office. We’ll ask for your insurance information if you have it, and get you your New Patient paperwork, or you can come in 15 minutes early to your first appointment to fill it out.

How do I prepare for my visit?

If possible, wear loose comfortable clothing - sleeves and pants that roll up are ideal. Depending on what we are treating, you will most likely stay fully clothed. Eating a light meal within a couple hours before coming in is recommended, it is best not to be excessively full or very hungry when you arrive.

What happens on my first visit?

We will go over your health history together, discuss your goals and address any questions or concerns you have. I’ll also ask questions based on traditional Chinese diagnostic principles that will help guide our treatment plan. Next we get you on the table for treatment, and talk through every step of the way so you feel cared for and comfortable.

How long is my first visit?

Generally we need about 90 minutes for your first appointment, which includes a full treatment. Follow-up treatments are about 60 minutes, depending on your needs and preferences.

What happens after treatment?

Most people feel a sense of calm clarity after treatment, or a pleasant “floaty” sensation. This can last up to several hours, or even into the following day. Many people report sleeping more deeply the night after their treatment. It is ok to resume your normal daily activities, but best to avoid anything too physically strenuous. It is of course beneficial to drink plenty of water after treatment.

How many sessions are needed?

This depends on what you are seeking treatment for, how long you have had the condition, your general state of health and many other factors. Sometimes we achieve the results we want in a session or two, but chronic or complicated conditions can take weeks or even months to resolve. It may sometimes take longer to achieve results than with western medicine, but with Chinese medicine they are often permanent.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans and can verify benefits for you when you call to schedule. We also accept HAS/FSA cards. Ask about our treatment package discounts, gift certificates, and financial hardship/OHP discount.

Can I call and ask my acupuncturist questions between appointments?

Yes! You can always call the office with any questions or concerns you have. We are here to help you navigate your healing journey.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

We have a 24 hour cancellation notice except in the case of emergency. We will always try to accommodate schedule changes when we can.
